Exercise

Q1. Fill in the blanks in the following.

i) Artificial magnet are made in different shapes such as  Horse shoe and cylindrical

ii) The materials which are attracted towards a magnet are called Magnetic materials

iii) Paper is not Magnetic material .

iv) In olden days sailor used to find direction by suspending a piece of Magnet

v) A magnet always has Two poles.

Q2. State whether the following statements are true or false

i) Cylindical magnet has only one pole

ii) Artificial magnets were discovered in Greece .

iii) Similar poles of a magnet repel each other .

iv) Maximum iron filings stick in the middle of the bar magnet when it is brought them near.

v) Bar magnets always point towards north south direction.

vi) Compass can be used to find east west direction at any place .

vii) Rubber is a magnetic material .

Answer - i) false

ii) False

iii). True

iv) false

v) true

vi) true

viii) false

Q3. It was observed that a pencil sharpener gets attached by both the poles of the magnet although its body is made of plastic name the material that might have been used to make the part of it ?

Answer -  The pencil sharpener is made up of iron and iron is a magnetic materials. It is easily attracted towards the magnet so pencil sharpener get attracted towards the magnet

Q4. Column I shows different position in which one pole of magnet is placed near that the other pole column II indicates the resulting action between them for each situation fill in the blanks

Q5. Write any two properties of a magnet?

Answer -  The two properties of magnet are

  • Magnet attract magnetic materials like iron ,nikel , cobalt
  • Like magnetic poles repel each other while unlike magnetic poles are attract each other

Q6. Where are poles of a bar magnet located ?

Answer - Bar magnet has two poles north pole and South pole and it is located at both ends

Q7. A bar magnet has no marking to indicate its pole how would you find out the location of the north pole

Answer -  A bar magnet has a property when it freely suspended it always come to rest in North and South direction in North facing end of the magnet is north pole while the South end of the magnet in South pole.in this way  we identify the location of North pole

Q8. You are given an iron strip how will you make it into a magnet?

Answer- We can make the iron strip into magnet by using touch and stroke method .

This method a bar magnet is moved along the length of the iron strip from starting from one end to another end and repeat that process at least  40 to 50 times then the iron strip will become a bar magnet with two poles

Q9. How is a compass used to find directions ?

Answer- The compass has a pin with a red Arrow and that needle indicates the north pole. If we know that north direction then we can identify all other three direction the north is towards the front and South would be towards the back  east is towards the right side of north and West towards the left of north

Q10. A magnet was brought from different directions to words a toy boat that has been floating in water in a tub effect observed in each case is stated in column I possibly the reasons for the observed effect are mentioned in column II  match the statements given in column I with those in column II

Coloumn I

a) Boat gets attracted towards the magnet

b) Boat is not affected by the magnet

c) Boat moves towards the magnet if north pole of the magnet is brought near its head

d) Boat moves away from the magnet when North pole is brought near its head

e) Boat floats without changing its direction

Column II

Boat is fitted with a magnet with north pole towards its head

Boat is fitted with a magnet with South pole towards its head

Board has a small magnet fixed along its length

Boat is fitted with a magnet with the South pole towards its head

Boat is fitted with magnet with the north pole towards its head

Answer-

What is made up of non magnetic material .

a) Boat gets attracted towards the magnet. → what is made up of magnetic material

b) Boat is not affected by the magnet   Boat is  made up of non magnetic material

c) What more towards the magnet when the north pole of the magnet is brought near its head   boat is fitted with a magnet with the South pole towards its head

d) Boat moves away from the magnet when the north pole is brought near its head  boat is fitted with magnet with the north pole towards its head

e) Boat floats without changing its direction   both has a small magnet fixed along its length
