Chapter 2 - Nutrition in animals

Q1. Fill in the blanks

a) The main step of nutrition in humans are are injection ,digestion,  absorption ,assimilation and egestion

b) The largest gland in the human body is liver.

c) The stomach release hydrochloric acid and Digestive  juices which act on food.

d) The inner wall of the small intestine has many finger like outgrowth called villi

e) Amoeba digest its food in the  food vacuole

Q2 . Mark T if the statement is true and F if the statement is false

a) Digestion of starch take start in the stomach.

b) The tongue help in mixing food with saliva

c) The gall bladder temporary store bile.

d) The ruminants bring back swallowed grass into their mouth and chew it for some time.

Ans - a) False     b) True       c)  True       d)True

Q3. Tick mark the correct answer in the following.

a) Fat is completely digested in the

i) stomach. ii)  mouth    iii) small intestine

iv)  large intestine

b) Water from the undigested food is absorbed mainly in the.

 i) Stomach.  ii)  food pipe.   iii)  small intestine

iv)  large intestine

Q4. Match the atoms of column I with those given in column II

Column I.                                     Column II

Food components               Products of digestion

  • Carbohydrate.                    fatty acid and glycerol
  • Proteins.                                     sugar
  • Fats.                                        amino acids

Ans -

Column I.                                     Column II

Food components               Products of digestion

  • Carbohydrate.                              sugar
  • Proteins.                                   amino acids
  • Fats.                                       fatty acid and glycerol

Q5 . What are villi what is their location and function? .

  • Ans- The inner walls of the small intestine have a number of finger like outgrowth these are called villi .
  • The villi increases the surface area for the absorption of digested food absorbed the digested food particles which then pass into the blood capillaries which are beneath them and through the blood they reach every cell of the body .
  • The cell membrane of villi allows nutrient to absorb easily into the blood

Q6 . Where is the bile  produced  ? Which component of the food does it help to digest

Ans - Bile is produced in liver and stored in gall bladder it help in digestion of fats

Q7 . Name the type of carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants but not by humans give the reason also ? .

Ans-

  • Cellulose is a complex carbohydrate is digested by ruminants but not by humans because ruminants have a large sac like stomach called rumen.
  • It is located in between oesophagus and small intestine
  • The rumen have specific type of bacteria which have a capacity to digest the cellulose. That type of bacteria are not present in humans.

Q8 . Why do we get instant energy from glucose

Ans - Because glucose is the simple form of carbohydrate it not undergo in the process of digestion directly absorbed by the cell and get energy so we get instant energy from glucose

Q9 . Which part of the digestive canal is involved in

a) absorption of food -  small intestine

b) chewing of food -  buccal cavity

c) killing of bacteria  - stomach

 d) complete digestion of food  - small intestine

e) formation of faeces -  large intestine

Q10. Write one similarity and one difference between the nutrition in amoeba and human being.?

Ans.. Similarity

In amoeba and human being digestive juice are secreted in  the body of both and that  juice help to break down the complex food component into simpler substance.

Differences

The digestion process of amoeba is simple than the human being amoeba engulf the food from surrounding by food vacuole with the help of pseudopodia and the undigested food which is largely carbon dioxide expelled out by the vacuole while  in human being the food is taken inside by mouth undergo in the complex process of digestion and undigested food expelled in the form of faeces.

Q11. Match the atoms of column I with suitable items in column II

Column I                                     Column II

  1. Salivary gland                bile juice secretion.
  2. Stomach                    storage of undigested food
  3. Liver                         saliva secretion
  4. Rectum                     acid release
  5. Small intestine          digestion is completed
  6. Large intestine         absorption of water

                                           Release of faeces

Ans - Column I                                     Column II

  1. Salivary gland             saliva secretion
  2. Stomach                    acid release
  3. Liver                          bile juice secretion.
  4. Rectum                    Release of faeces
  5. Small intestine          digestion is completed
  6. Large intestine         absorption of water

Q12. Label the parts of human digestive system

Ans -

Q13. Can we survive only on RAW leafy vegetables grass discuss ?

Ans-

We cannot survive only on RAW leafy vegetables and grass because raw vegetables and grass are rich in cellulose it is a type of carbohydrate and we do not have certain type of enzyme and bacteria which can digest the cellulose so we cook the raw food material and convert it into simple carbohydrate and then include it in our diet
