Q9. Why do ionic compounds have high melting points

Answer-

In ionic compound the ionic bond or  electrostatic force of attraction is a very strong . It has a strong force of attraction between the oppositely charged ions when the compound is heated the lots of the heat energy is consumed by it to break the strong electrostatic force of attraction during melting therefore ionic compounds have high melting and boiling point

Answer

Low reactivity series metal do not be corroded easily

Eg - Gold ,Silver ,Platinum etc.

Q15. What are alloys

Answer-

An alloy is a homogenous mixture of two or more metals or  metals and a nonmetals combine to form a more durable compound electrical conductivity and the melting point of the alloy is less than that of a pure metal

Example- Steel  = iron + zinc

Stainless steel  = iron + metal + chromium + zinc

Q1. Which of the following pairs will give displacement reactions

a) NaCl solution and copper metal

b) MgCl2 solution and Aluminium metal

c) FeSOsolution and silver metal

d) AgNOsolution in copper metal

Answer-

d) AgNO solution in copper metal

Copper metal displace silver because copper is more reactive than silver

2AgNO+ Cu   Cu(NO3)2 + 2 Ag

Q2.  Which of the following method is suitable for preventing an iron frying pan from rusting

a) Applying grease

b) Applying paint

Answer-

Applying a coating of zinc will prevent the iron frying pan from rusting

Q3. An element react with oxygen to give a compound with a high melting point This compound is also soluble in water the elements is likely to be

a)calcium

b) carbon

c) silicon

d) iron

Anwers-

The compound is calcium because it combines with oxygen to give CaO calcium oxide

Q4. Food cans are coated with tin and not with zinc because

a) Zinc is costlier than tin

b) Zinc has a higher melting point than tin

c) Zinc is more reactive than tin

d) Zinc is less reactive than tin

Answer-

Zinc is more reactive than tin

Q5. You are given a hammer a battery a bulb wires and a switch

a) How could you use them to distinguish between samples of metals and nonmetals

b) Asscess the usefulness of these tests in distinguishing between metals and nonmetals

Answer -

a ) Take sample of given materials of metals and nonmetals in strike hammer on it if it convert into thin sheet then it is metal if not then it is non metal

When a hammer strike on the both material the metals produce sound their nonmetals not produce any sound

When both the substance are arranged in electric circuit the metals can conduct electricity while non metal cannot be conduct electricity

b) from above all test it is clear that the metals show malleable ,Sonorous ,good conductor of electricity  properties while  non metal are not shows such type of property

Q6. What are amphoteric oxides give two examples of amphoteric oxides

Answer-

The metallic oxide which shows the properties of acid as well as bases are called amphoteric oxide they are react with acid and bases to form salt and water and that reaction we called neutralization reaction

ZnO +  HCl    →ZnCl2 + H2O

ZnO+ 2NaOH.          Na2ZnO2 +  H2O

Q7. Name two metals which will displace hydrogen from dilute acids and two metals which will not

  •  Anode is used as a a metal M it is positively charged
  •  Cathode is used as a strip of pure metal M which is negatively charged
  •  Electrolyte is the aqua solution of salt of metal m

Q9 . Pratyush took sulphur powder on the spatula and heated it he collected the gas evolved by inverting a test tube over it as shown in figure below

a) What will be the action of gas on

i) Dry litmus paper

ii) Moist litmus paper

b) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction taking place

SO2 + H2O    →     H2SO3

Q10. State two ways to prevent the rusting of iron

Answer

Two methods for preventing rusting of iron are

  • Applying paint on the iron articles for greasing to the iron articles prevent rusting process
  • Galvanization process is also avoid the rusting of iron in this process the zinc metal is coated on the iron surface

Q11. What type of oxide are formed when nonmetals combine with oxygen

Answer  .

Non metals form acidic oxide in their aqueous solution

C + O2.     →    CO2

CO2 + H2O    →     H2CO3

Carbonic acid  ---- blue litmus change into red

Q12. Give reason

a) Platinum gold and silver are used to make jewellery

b) Sodium potassium and lithium are stored under oil

c) Aluminium is a highly reactive metal yet it is used to make utensils for cooking.

d) Carbonate and sulphide ores are usually converted into oxides during the process of extraction

Answer

a) Platinum gold and silver are highly malleable and least reactive metals they they are not corroded by air and water easily so they are used to make jewellery

b) Sodium potassium and lithium are very high reactive metal. These metals are react radially with atmospheric oxygen to form oxide so to prevent the oxidation of the metal it stored in oil because it does not react with oil

c) Aluminium is highly reactive metal but its oxide is less reactive so during the preparation of utensils the thin layer of Aluminium oxide covered on the aluminium to prevent the corrosion

d) Extraction of metal from its oxide is more easy process than the extraction of metals from its carbonate and sulphide so carbonate and sulphide firstly converted into oxides and then the extraction of metal takes place

Q13. You must have seen tarnished copper vessels being cleaned with lemon or tamarind juice explain why these so substances are effective in cleaning the vessels

Answer

When copper is reacted with atmospheric oxygen then copper carbonate is formed this is the thin layer present on the copper vessels. This layer is insoluble in water so it cannot be cleaned by water but it is soluble in acids present in lemons and tamarind contain citric acid and tartaric acid respectively so .A substance containing acid can be more effective in cleaning of the vessels made up of copper

Q14. Differentiate between metal and nonmetal on the basis of their chemical properties

Answer

Q15. Man went door to door posing as a goldsmith. He  promised to bring back the glitter of old and gold ornaments and unsuspecting lady gave a set of gold bangles to him which he dipped  in a particular solution the bangles sparkled  like a new but their weight was reduced drastically . The lady was upset but after a futile argument the man with the retreat can you play the detective to find out the nature of the solution he had is used .

Answer

The man used ACqua regia mixture it is only a solution which can dissolve the gold and due to that dissolving process their weight was reduced drastically. Aqua regia is a mixture of concentrated HCL concentrated HNO3 in the ratio of 3: 1

Q16. Give reasons why copper is used to make hot water tanks and not steel (an alloy of iron)

Answer-

Iron is more reactive than the copper when it come in contact with hot steam it formed Fe3O4 so the body of tank is made up of copper but not  steel because copper does not react with water

3Fe+ 4 H2O  →    Fe3O 4 + H2O
