Chapter 12- Reproduction in plants

Exercise

Q1. Fill in the blank

a) Production of new individual from the vegetative part of parent is called vegetative reproduction

b) Flower may have either male or female reproductive parts such a flower is called unisexual flower

c) The transfer of pollen grains from anther to the stigma of the same flower for another flower of the same kind is known as self pollination .

d) The fusion of male and female gametes is termed as fertilization

e) Seed dispersal takes place by means of wind , water and animals .

Q2. Describe the different methods of asexual reproduction give examples .?

Answer -  Methods of a sexual reproduction are

Vegetative propagation

In this method the plant body is reproduced with the help of stem leaves root and Bud like vegetative part

Budding

Budding is a simple method  in yeast a small bud is develop on the body of yeast cell it grow and after the complete growth and detached from the body and fall on the suitable substratum  and separately grow

Fragmentation

Fragmentation is possible in algae due to some external pressure the algal threads are divided into number of pieces and after getting the proper nutrition and water each piece is separately grow

Spore formation

In mucor ( fungi )a spore are developed on the tip of the mucor   inside the sporangium and after the external pressure that sporangium brust and all spores are fall on the suitable substratum and separately grow

Q3. Explain what you understand by sexual reproduction ?

Answer -   In sexual reproduction two parents are include . When Male gamete is combined with female gamete then fertilization is takes place and it produce zygote .Zygote undergo  in multiple division and form embryo and after the continuous development embryo is converted into body of organism

Q 4. The main difference between a sexual and asexual reproduction ?

Answer - The difference between sexual and asexual reproduction are

Sexual reproduction

1. In sexual reproduction two parents are required

2. The offsprings have some different properties than  parents

3. Variations are produced in sexual reproduction

4. Animals human ratbat etc .

Asexual reproduction

1. Only one parent is needed for it

2. Offsprings are exactly similar to parent

3. Variations are not produce

Q 5. Sketch the reproductive parts of a flower ?

Answer -

Q6. Explain the difference between self pollination and cross pollination ?

Answer - self pollination

1. Pollen grains are transferred to stigma of same flower

2. Pollinating agent are not required

3 . Ex - sunflower and pea

Cross pollination

1. Pollen grains are transferred to stigma of different flower of different plant

2. Pollinating agents are required

3.Ex-  Rose ,Jasmine etc

Q7. How does the process of fertilization take place in flowers ?

Answer - Fusion of male gamete with female gamete it's called fertilization and after fertilization zygote is developed zygote undergo in repeated mitotic division and embryo is formed and from embryo seed is developed

Q8. Describe the various ways by which seed are dispersed ?

Answer - The various way in which the seeds are dispersed are

By wind - Some seeds are Hairy and wing like structure attached to it  , light in weight and with the help of wind they are move from one place to another place .

By water  .- In case of water plants the seeds are lightweight and they swim on the surface of water and move from one place to another place

By animals  - some seeds have spine on it and they easily attached to the fur of animals and transferred and some seeds are engulf by bird and animal by fruit and are dispersed by them

By Brusting  - fruits of some plants are brust due to external pressure and seeds are dispersed by brusting of fruit

By human -human dispersed the seeds when doing farming .

Q9. Match items in column I with those in column I I
